The pools are full, the sun is out, and the road is ready for your family road trip. Summer is finally here, and many people are gearing up for their summer road trip. This preparation can turn into a strenuous process, especially when preparing for traveling with kids. Although many people know how to prepare their car for winter, summer brings a new set of challenges to prepare for. Here are 3 tips to ensure your summer road trip is safe and stress-free.
- Inspect Your Car Before You Hit the Road
Give your car a thorough inspection before you leave on your trip. You can either do this yourself or take it to get inspected by a mechanic. Check all belts for cracks or blisters, check your radiator, caps, and hoses for any blemishes or breaks. Check the cooling system, motor oil levels, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. For your tires, make sure that your tire pressure is at the correct level. Hot pavement and deflated tires is a bad combination and can lead to your tires blowing out. You’ll also want to make sure that you have all proper equipment to protect your car from extreme heat. This includes a windshield sun protector to keep the interior of your car cool and protect your interior from sun damage. There are many aspects of a vehicle that need to be inspected to ensure a safe trip. When in doubt, bring your vehicle in to Color Customs Collision for a free estimate on your repairs.
2. Pack an Emergency Kit
Similar to an emergency kit for the winter months, you should also pack an emergency kit for the summer months. This should include, but is not limited to:
- Emergency Car Tire Repair Kits
- Gloves, towels
- First Aid Kit
- Jumper Cables
- Plenty of Water Bottles
3. Traveling with Kids
If you’re traveling with children, here is a list of must-dos for a kid-friendly road trip.
- Pack a snack cooler – fill it with juice boxes, lots of water, snacks. It will keep your kids happy, as well as reduce the number of times you stop.
- Speaking of stopping, taking a break every 2-3 hours is recommended. Whether this means stopping at a gas station for a bathroom break, or just pulling over (safely) to stretch, it’s important for both the kids and the driver.
