Even if you’ve lived in the DFW Metroplex for a short amount of time, you are familiar with the construction that seemingly happens on every road you drive on. Construction zones require your full attention and can be extremely dangerous if you are driving distracted or at high speeds.
Here are 5 tips to keep in mind next time you drive in a construction zone:
- Slow Down and Be Alert
First and foremost, make sure to slow down enough to safely pass through the construction zone. Ensure you are driving at a speed that would be easily halted if a construction worker were to step out in front of you. Stay on alert at all times in case of an unexpected obstruction in the road.
2. Comply with Directions Given by Construction Workers
Stay alert and watch for a construction worker waving a flag and giving directions. Be compliant with all directions the construction worker gives, and make sure to stop when he says to stop and go when he says to go.
3. Be Patient
With that being said, make sure to be patient while in a construction zone. Impatience, followed with high vehicle speeds, is a recipe for disaster. Collisions are much more likely when this happens, and it could cost you several thousand dollars and risk lives.
4. Do Not Follow Too Closely
In any situation, but especially construction zones, make sure to not follow the cars in front of you too closely. A good rule of thumb to follow is to make sure you’re far enough behind the car in front of you that you can see their back axels.
5. Map Out Your Destination and Plan for Delays
Many of the mobile mapping apps that are available nowadays show updated traffic conditions. To ensure that you are prepared for construction traffic, map out your trip ahead of time, and if you are able to take detours to avoid construction, make sure to do it.
Construction can be unexpected and frustrating if you do not plan ahead. Remember your defensive driving skills and that valuable lives are working in the construction zones. Ensure their safety and your own.
