Ongoing vehicle maintenance is important no matter the season but is vitally important during the hot summer months. Before you hit the road on your morning commute, or your summer road trip, follow these 5 vehicle maintenance tips to ensure you and your family’s safety.
- Check Your A/C
When you run your air conditioner, make sure it is running cool. If it is running lukewarm air, or even hot air, or not running to its full capacity, take it to an automotive repair shop to get it repaired. Also, make sure your cabin A/C filter is replaced when needed.
- Check All Tires
Inspect all 4 tires for any holes, breaks, cuts, sidewall gouging or stripping to make sure they’re in optimal condition for hot pavement. Check the pressure, and make sure your tires are passing the penny test, featured on this blog (link to hydroplaning blog). Under-inflated tires and hot pavement are a recipe for a blowout on the road.
- Check Engine Fluids
Do a check-in on your engine fluids and top off whatever may be running low. Engine fluids include:
- Engine Oil
- Transmission Fluid
- Brake Fluid
- Power Steering Fluid
- Check Your Alignment
If you catch your vehicle pulling to one side of the road, your steering wheel not being centered when you’re driving straight, or your steering wheel is vibrating, it’s a good time to get your alignment checked. Many things can cause alignment issues, like running over potholes, rough roads under construction, or hitting curbs. Getting realigned will prevent your vehicle from obtaining further damage in the future.
- Test Your Battery
Summer heat can cause fluid loss in a battery, which causes oxidating in the battery’s components. Whether your car is brand new, or especially if your car is older, you need to test your battery before you head out on the road.
