The roads and highways in and around Denton and the DFW Metroplex can be a safety challenge for us all, even on the best of days. But as we transition from an extended dry spell to periods of rain, the lanes become even more treacherous. Long periods of dry weather led to dirt and oil deposits on the roads. As rain moves in, the oils and dirt combine to cause excessively slippery road services. Many drivers, used to driving on dry roadways, fail to take this danger into account and continue to drive as they have been on dry surfaces. The result is a dramatic increase in rainy day accidents, resulting in vehicle damage, physical injuries and even some deaths.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT), we should always slowdown in rainy conditions and extend the distance between our vehicle and the vehicle in front of us at least twofold over what we would in dry conditions. TXDOT warns of the dangers of hydroplaning, a situation when a vehicle starts sliding uncontrollably due to its tires encountering so much water the treads cannot displace the water. This results in the tires actually losing contact with the roadway. This is also an important reason to slow down and keep our distance while driving.
Frankly, there are some vehicles that provide enhanced safety measures for drivers. For example, many of today’s vehicles are produced with front wheel drive, which gives the driver more control than driving a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Some manufacturers, such as Mazda, are now offering standard all-wheel drive (AWD) on many of their models. If you are thinking of replacing your vehicle in the future, you may want to consider a front wheel drive or an all-wheel drive vehicle. These options give you more control in all situations and enhance your maneuverability.
Finally, as we all welcome the rain into North Texas, remember never drive into high water. Water levels that reach up to the middle of the wheel can carry away virtually any vehicle. Every year, dozens of people die by driving into high water areas.
